What is Zakat in Islam

In Islam, Zakat is one of the Five Pillars, or fundamental duties, that Muslims are required to fulfill. Zakat is a charitable tax that Muslims are required to pay on their wealth, and it is typically used to support those in need, such as the poor, orphans, and widows.

The amount of Zakat that is required to be paid is based on a percentage of a person's wealth. The exact percentage varies depending on the school of Islamic law followed, but it is generally around 2.5%. Zakat is typically paid on money, gold, silver, and other types of wealth, although there are some exceptions.

The purpose of Zakat is to purify a person's wealth and to promote social justice. It is seen as a way for Muslims to share their wealth with those who are less fortunate and to help alleviate poverty. In addition to its spiritual significance, Zakat is also considered an important economic and social institution in many Muslim communities.

As Muslims, one of our fundamental duties is to fulfill the obligation of Zakat. This charitable tax is used to support those in need, such as the poor, orphans, and widows.

Here we encourage you to consider directing your zakat donation online to the Patient Behbud Society By AKUH. This fund provides financial assistance to patients at the Aga Khan University Hospital who are unable to afford the cost of their medical treatment.

By paying Zakat to the AKU Hospital Patients fund, you will be helping to ensure that those in need have access to the healthcare they require. Your contributions will make a real difference in the lives of patients and their families, and will help to alleviate the burden of medical expenses.
